What to expect at your first gala (for parents)

Your child has been training hard, their name is entered for the gala, and suddenly ... you’re packing camp chairs, snacks, and trying to decode a heat sheet that looks like a spreadsheet!

Welcome to your first swimming gala. It’s a whole new world, and it can feel overwhelming at first. But don’t worry, you’re not alone, and we’ve got you covered.

At TC Aquatics, we believe in supporting not just the swimmers, but the families behind them. Here’s everything you need to know to survive (and even enjoy!) your first gala day.

Galas are long. Bring supplies.

Pack like you’re heading to a mini camping trip, because most galas span several hours or even the whole day.

You’ll need:

  • A comfy camping chair
  • Snacks (food stalls can be pricey and have long queues)
  • Water bottles
  • A hat and sunscreen (for outdoor venues)
  • Entertainment for the waiting (books, magazines, Netflix on your phone, powerbanks, knitting - no judgement!)
  • A blanket for warmth in winter months

Packing for your swimmer is covered here. Also, don’t forget to label your child’s gear. The pool deck is the Bermuda Triangle for goggles and swim caps.

You might not see much of your child; and that’s okay

Once warm-up begins, swimmers usually stay in the team area or with their coach. You won’t always get to sit with them or check in between races. They’ll be called to marshalling by the officials, and coaches will handle all race instructions. Your job is to cheer, take photos (if allowed), and be a positive presence from the sidelines.

We have a TC gazebo for parents during galas so it's a time to get to know each other and build friendships that last long after your children have left school.

It’s not about medals, especially not yet

At your first few galas, focus less on times and more on the experience:

  • Did your child have fun?
  • Did they try their best?
  • Did they learn something?

PBs (personal bests) and medals will come in time. Right now, confidence and enjoyment are the real wins.

You’ll hear a lot of swim jargon; ask us anything!

What’s a heat? What does “DQ” mean? Why are there so many whistles? Don’t stress! Every swim parent starts out feeling a bit lost. Our coaches and experienced parents are always happy to explain how it all works. Just ask. We’ve all been there!

Your vibe matters

Galas can be emotional, but your calm, cheerful presence helps your child more than you realise. Avoid saying things like “That wasn’t your best” or “You should have won that race.”

Instead try:

“You looked so confident off the blocks!”

“What did you enjoy most about that race?”

“I loved watching you swim.”

Conclusion

Your first gala is a milestone, not just for your child, but for you too. Expect a few nerves, a few snack runs, and a lot of proud moments.

At TC Aquatics, we’re here to guide you, cheer with you, and make sure you feel part of the team from day one.

So pack the snacks, bring your smile, and get ready to watch your swimmer take the first splash into something amazing.

"Your child won’t remember their first race time, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel afterwards."
